This style of chair was very popular in the late 18th early 19th century in Sweden. They were called Bellman chairs named after Carl Mikael Bellman, the very popular court musician to King Gustav III who played the lute.
These chairs were probably used as occasional chairs in a salon as the backs are upholstered for extra comfort and braces have been added to make them very sturdy. The pale cream paint is original, and they are upholstered in a Belgian linen.
