-SOLD- A Swedish Folkart Secretary Dated 1822 Attributed to Johan Backstrom

This secretary can be appreciated both as a fine piece of furniture and a work of art. Johan Backstrom was a prolific designer of many cupboards and other furniture each bearing his distinctive decorative painting. His painted furniture is on display in museums and is the subject of the book, “Johan Backstrom – Folk Artist in Ostergotland.” The outside of this cupboard has been dry scrapped to the original pale green paint. The door panels, each with a painting of roses, are framed by an unusual repeating stylization – a signature of Backstrom. Another signature technique Backstrom employed in this piece is the shading of the panel backgrounds from light green to dark in the shape of a crescent, which gives a wonderful illusion of depth. The interior of the top and bottom have been repainted, however the writing surface and its drawers are original.
