-SOLD- A Swedish Late Gustavian Cupboard from Jämtland Dated 1843

This two piece cupboard alight with original blue paint is signed “MOD 1843” on the front cabinet doors. The area it comes from is Jämtland, a region in northern Sweden tangential to the Arctic Circle. During the winter its towns get an average of only four and half hours of sunshine a day. To combat the lack of sun, Jämtlanders used bright and vivid paints, as seen on this piece, to add cheer to the darkest days of the year. The interior paint, although not original, is a pleasing pale off-white. The top doors open to reveal a curving silverware rack, four shelves, as well as two small drawers of unique construction. The angular pediment shows Gustavian influence with a flat top and caps the vertical lines of the piece. The bottom cupboard with two doors opens to reveal more storage.
