This Swedish antique wooden canteen in a barrel shape was used to portably carry wine or water. The two holes on the top would have had a cork stopper and the inside was sealed like a traditional wine cask. The well preserved original blue paint has an exceptional patina, and it carries the initials of its owner as well as the date “1844”. There is a possibility of military origin, as the blue is the same color as the deeper blue used by the Swedish government at that time. A superb example of 19th century Swedish country life, and today a beautiful piece to own and display.
